Many professional photographers suggest purchasing a padded backpack as camera bags for digital cameras and something water resistant versus something waterproof.

Professional photographers always carry their digital cameras and padded camera bags, whether they are backpack style camera cases or the fanny pack wrap around the waist style, they are always made with thermal covered foam that helps protect their valuable photography equipment.

The reason most professional photographers suggest purchasing specifically made camera carrying backpacks is because with SLR camera bags, people know exactly what you have in them; a camera, and in public you have to be extra vigilant and not set the bag down where someone else could walk away with it.  Camera theft on your vacation could ruin a great holiday and have you missing out on all those great photographs.  With a backpack, people don’t know you are carrying camera equipment, they just think it’s a backpack filled with personal items.

Many of the padded backpacks are compartmentalized in which they have many compartments for all the different camera parts and accessories.  There is a space for lenses, batteries, the battery charger, and some even have a small compartment for the memory chip/ card and the cable that connects the camera to the computer.  There is even room in a camera backpack for a camcorder in addition to personal effects such as an iPhone, MP3 player or CD player and CDs.  Some backpacks even have enough room for a laptop computer which makes downloading vacation pictures while still on vacation a great idea.

Other items the photographer should always carry with them is extra rechargeable batteries and the rechargeable charging case because most digital cameras use rechargeable batteries at a high rate of speed.  Having backup batteries is always a good idea but the backups may also run out, so always carry a charger with you.

Another thing to double up on, according to professional photographers, is the memory cards.  An external device that allows you to backup photos is another good idea to take on your trip and leave at the hotel.  Make sure you backup your photographs each time you return from an outing.  This way if your camera is stolen, you will at least have your photos.
